Particularly in the beginning, there’s a whole lot of Firefly. Nightchaser reminds me of so many skiffy (science fictional) things that it’s hard to pick one.

Shade Ganavan had oodles of arrogance, oodles of charm, and oodles of something that made me want to kick him in the nuts. She gets her hands on some extremely hot commodity, setting of a dramatic interstellar chase leading her to dock a very damaged ship planetside. Tess is a rebel, fighting against the very, very evil Overlord of the known galaxy as a captain of a spaceship. It reads like a romance writers clever attempts to break into SFF, and unfortunately failing. The writing is strong in places, the interpersonal scenes the best parts, but overall the story does not ring true. The worldbuilding is rudimentary and lacks internal coherence and logic. A space opera romance on the very light side.
